The Mage
History
Mages are perhaps the most interesting of all the differing classes.
No one knows quite how or when the use of magic started, or how it was
discovered. Over the centuries though it has grown from a weak and ineffectual
art into something, when controlled by a master, is overwhelming. Mages
tend to think of themselves as a bit better than everyone else. This
shows up most in their larger guild halls, some are quite over the top
and ostentatious. The power they wield quite often backs up this thinking
and there have been horrendous mage wars over the years. Thankfully these
are very rare and the last was over four centuries ago. The mage wars also
showed up how touchy mages get as more often than not the problems started
over truly minor slights, but no-one can turn a molehill into a mountain
better than a mage.
No new magic has been created for over a century. All the spells that
are taught and found have been known for many years and all mages know
the lists well. Recently though a mage by the name of Alleynes proved that
the astral realm offered up new spells. He demonstrated this by using a
new spell which had some form of earth component to destroy a roaming band
of goblin raiders. This has alerted all the other mages to the fact that
something new is out there and they are all searching frantically for clues.
The guild is in upheaval at present as Alleynes has disappeared before
he would show others how this new spell worked.
Attributes
The mage is dependent almost entirely on his collection of spells.
Very poor fighters, even the best ones have trouble using many weapons
and some even disdain the use of weapons at all, preferring to rely on spell,
wand and potion. The mages are able to teach some basic spells to others,
but their affinity with magic allows them to detect if an item has a magical
aura. They can also boost the effect so that they are able to divine how
much charge remains in a magical item and even what spell might be contained
therein.
